Manchester-born Caoilfhionn Rose has matured as an artist by exploring experimental approaches to expressing her wonder at the beauty of nature, her passion for music in all its forms, and her belief in the restorative power of both in the troubled post-COVID world.
Energetic, constantly searching and always curious, Caoilfhionn has developed a voice that is both ancestral and modern, boldly exploring contemporary technologies to reinvent the traditional art of song from the 1920s. Her music is rooted in a knowledge of folk, jazz and all the great composers of the twentieth century. She seems to create a magical, otherworldly space of her own devising, mixing piano with synthesizers, and contrasting a live rhythm section and saxophone embellishments with ambient samples and forward-looking production techniques. This year she released her latest album, Constellation, with contributions from Matthew Halsall, drummer Alan Taylor and bassist Gavin Barras, as well as Jordan Smart from Mammal Hands. With this album, she explores new dimensions of her singing, evolving from the natural, pure expression of her first albums towards a more instrumental approach. Her voice sometimes becomes an abstract sound, breaking away from verbal conventions. ‘Everything is play and experimentation,’ she explains, ’to see how far our imagination might take us.’
After supporting Mammal Hands in 2022, Caoilfhionn Rose returns to Paris for a concert at La Boule Noire on 3 May.
