Following on from ‘Waves’ and its four million streams, Pale Grey are now looking to the future with ‘It feels like I always knew you’, the third album from a clear-sighted band, aware of the world’s torments and the issues of the day. Born in the hills of Belgium, between eternal forests and the desire to be elsewhere, the quartet cultivate their melancholy through songs of delicate charm. At the junction of electronica, dream pop and the abstractions of the hip-hop scene, Pale Grey sketch out a singular universe.

Created in one of the secret gardens of Belgian jazz alongside producer Ash Workman (Metronomy, Christine and the Queens, Baxter Dury), ‘It feels like I always knew you’ takes us to the heart of everyday life. During a journey on public transport. There, among the other passengers, the mind wanders, trying to project itself, to imagine the lives of others. In a split second, the imagination flourishes, moving freely between fiction and reality, hunches and foolish certainties. As in an Inarritu film, poetic evocation prevails over realistic representation.

Pale Grey’s new album takes a close look at our modern societies through melodies that are as close to reality as possible. Close to people and their experiences, the band probes and questions human nature. Strengths and weaknesses, love, wisdom, hopes and wanderings are intertwined in songs personified by twelve first names. These characters are the commuters of the new ‘It feels like I always knew you’. Their journey serves themes rooted in a disenchanted ordinariness: the migratory crisis, domestic violence, obscurantism and other sensitive subjects run through these real-life stories…

From Amin to Eve, Felix to Norma, Winston to Alba, all the faces of the extras in the new videos have been through situations similar to those in the songs. Pale Grey takes a closer look at these trajectories, which are shaken by unsuspected emotions, and follows an itinerary shared by thousands of lives.
