Great Lake Swimmers are a Canadian band from Wainfleet, Ontario. Formed in 2003 around songwriter Tony Dekker (vocals, guitar), they are making their mark on the Toronto scene with a folk-rock style influenced by Neil Young, only more evanescent. First self-titled album, followed by Bodies and Minds (2005) on the Fargo label. Uncertain Country, released last month by Pheromone Recordings and recorded between an abandoned church, a barn and an old chapel, is the band’s eighth album. Each one seems to reverberate the echo of the previous one before revealing its own richness. Dekker & Co. are quietly ploughing the same furrow, and it’s always beautiful.
Great Lake Swimmers are
Tony Dekker: lead vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica
Erik Arnesen: banjo, electric guitar, harmonium
Ryan: drums
Bret Higgins: upright bass
Kelsey McNulty: keyboards, accordion and backing vocals
Opening act: Picastro
The musical vehicle of songwriter Liz Hysen, Picastro hails from Toronto and has often crossed paths with the Great Lake Swimmers. Dekker sang on Picastro’s latest album, Exit, released in 2019 and praised by Pitchfork: https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/picastro-exit/
