Thomas Azier performs PANORAMA, with Annelotte Coster (keyboards), Maarten Hogenhuis (saxophone), Adrien Pallot (modular synthesizer), and a string ensemble. PANORAMA is a work built on incessant changes of scale, shifting from the intimate and everyday to the most dizzying mental landscapes. A moment of life on the edge of the precipice, where illness, desire, fear, and hope coexist and shape each other. The performance unfolds like a polyphonic narrative. Poems, field recordings, video projections, and stage interventions disrupt the traditional codes of the concert with a more fragmented structure, close to collage. Often described as poignant, Thomas Azier’s music stretches its melodic and melancholic sensibility with PANORAMA. It fuses string arrangements and experimental practices within a suite of enigmatic pieces. Azier’s voice becomes a true instrument of interpretation, sliding between masculine and feminine, human and animal, mythical and real. The songs interact with interludes that constantly change the rhythm of the whole, evoking a sense of constant channel surfing. The performance unfolds without interruption: music and images rarely intersect, preferring to take turns in a constantly changing exchange. Through these disparate fragments, Azier and his musicians gradually compose a final image that is at once coherent, monumental, and deeply intimate.
