Consider this your invitation to Café Molly, a lounge bar like no other. The lights are low, the martinis are chilled, the banquettes are velvet-covered and the room is ready to welcome the electrifying talent of whistler Molly Lewis.
After the exotic tracks on The Forgotten Edge EP and the tropical-inspired Mirage EP, Molly set out to embody the Café Molly sound for her debut album On The Lips, a dreamy tribute to classical ambient music, evoking hazy visions of Hollywood jazz clubs, Italian movie soundtracks and lovers’ prolonged embraces. Recorded with producer Thomas Brenneck, of the Menahan Street Band, at his new Diamond West Studios in Pasadena, and with an open-door policy during the sessions, a stream of renowned musicians found their way onto the album’s 10 tracks, including Nick Hakim, Brazilian guitarist Rogê, Latin Grammy nominee, Leland Whitty and Chester Hansen of Canadian instrumental band Badbadnotgood, Chicano soul band Thee Sacred Souls, who appear on the melancholy “Crushed Velvet”, experimental jazz pianist Marco Benevento and Leon Michels of El Michels Affair.
With her intoxicating compositions and sense of stagecraft, Molly Lewis looks set to join her heroes in the history of the Los Angeles lounge scene and beyond.
