Here are the musings of an old soul. Over a 10+ career spent between several music spheres, Sydney Valette sticks to a strict vision of discipline, that connects desperation with energy through a thoroughly electronic pop sensitivity ‘Home Aloneʼ is Sydney Valetteʼs 7th LP and finds him at his most epic and dystopian, and in full power of his assets. Its title might refer to a cult 90s family comedy, but this new collection has more in common with techno-punk science-fiction and modern day estrangement than with Christmas time entertainment – even though some of it has been produced during year-end holidays spent in isolation. Thematically, these new tracks are pure pandemic claustrophobic sadness, mixed with personal turmoils, namely heartbreaks, and some detached comments on current state of world affairs (as heard on opening cinematic vignette World Alone). Sonically, Sydney travels all over his beloved dark wave spectrum, from EBM to ambient, rave to italo disco, always driven by an unflinching pop heart (War Child, Mistress Of Desire). Still, on one hand, his approach to production and composition is rawer than ever, with a « no-bullshit » & « back to basics » attitude that strikes a fresh update to his art. Then on the other he experiments with dramatic sceneries (All Paradise, Citadelle), electronic chanson (Adieu), and pockets of intimacy (a
dusky rendering of Australian dark-folkers Death In Juneʼs Fall Apart). This new batch of songs will feed his upcoming shows, known for being some of the most dynamic and gripping stage solo performances by electronic standard.
